Kawagoe Castle is under renovation!

Closure Information

We are very sorry that you could not visit the interior of Kawagoe Castle "Hommaru-Goten", which is to be under a large-scale restoration from October 20th of 2008 to March of 2003 inclusive.

Kawagoe castle was originally built in 1457 by Ōta Dōshin and his famous son Dōkan under the order of Uesugi Mochitomo. About the same time, they also built the original Edo Castle. When Tokugawa Ieyasu conquered the Kantō district in 1590, he established Kawagoe-han. Kawagoe soon became a military base for transportation of goods and other materials to Edo. That's why twenty-one well-known historical characters successively became the lords of Kawagoe Castle. Today, most of the original sites of the castle are served as a park. The only remaining building "Hommaru-Goten", residence of the lord built in 1848, is used as a branch of Kawagoe City Museum.
